FUTURE EDUCATION
Re-designing homes to educate future generations
There’s no question in my mind that education has been turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic. In some instances it’s as if education institutions have been caught off guard. Everyday I think about how will parents cope with sudden changes that may come with the new normal. Yes, the new normal, a possibility of school closure for the rest of year 2020.
It’s clear to me that schools are not ready for a world that does not require buildings to impart knowledge. They are not ready to structure their business models to factor in less income whilst providing high quality education. It’s also clear to me that parents are not ready for a world that places the education responsibility squarely on their hands. The system was not designed for parents to educate their own children.
The reality however is that parents may need to decide to keep their children even if governments re-open schools. Every parent has to think carefully about the possibility of taking their children to a school that may just mean getting the virus. In case of schools being closed for the rest of the year and some offering online learning, parents will still have a responsibility to augment online learning with other aspects of learning that include social engagement, physical activity and practical learning.
The common denominator in everything related to educating children for the future is parental involvement. The adults in the room will have to take full responsibility. In a world where both or single parents are expected to earn a living it’s going to be tough to provide education for future generations. There are no easy answers. Online learning, home schooling and other known methods will not cut it. It looks like there will be a need to revamp how future generations will be educated.
